Modern Singapore was founded in 1819 as a British trading post and was under British rule until World War II. Until today, you can still find many of the colonial buildings across Singapore, among them commercial buildings, military installations, and churches. Particularly charming are the Singaporean shophouses that mix victorian style architecture with facades inspired by Malaysian or Chinese ornaments.
